Drashi Lhamo's Practice

Restricted Practice Warning

The following text is for educational purposes only. It comes from the teachings and writing of His Holiness Living Buddha Lian Sheng. By the rules of Tantric Buddhism, only those who have taken refuge in him and have been granted Drashi Lhamo’s empowerment should practice it.

If you do not hold these essential qualifications, you can still make offerings to her, but please refrain from chanting her mantra, forming her mudra and performing her yoga. That would be stealing the dharma, a serious matter.

In the words of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, “Just like one cannot obtain oil by pressing sand, one cannot perform the practice without the empowerment of the Guru and expect to get the desired results”.

If you do not have refuge in His Holiness Living Buddha Lian Sheng, and want to know how to obtain it, please follow these steps to take refuge.

The Practice of Drashi Lhamo

(1) Visualization:

Her complexion is yellow and black.
Her eyes are wide open, her brows tightly knit.
Her huge mouth gapes open, with a red tongue extending down to her chin.
She wears a crown of five skulls.
Her feet are chicken claws.
Her hands hold the sun and moon before her chest.

This appearance shows her great power to subdue and terrify evil forces.

She is a dharma protector.

She is also a wealth deity, able to grant sudden riches.

(2) Mantra Recitation:

Her mantra is: “Om. Mamo. Namo. Tongtong Zhazha. Soha.”

Recite 108 times or as many as possible.

(3) Entering Samadhi:

Meditate single-mindedly, perform “I enter and enter me”, achieve yogic union.

(4) Praise Verse:

Mamo goddess of illusion,
Suojibuzhi honored demoness,
rakshasi mother of the realm of beings,
all these names are yours.

At noon the laughing vajra mother,
at dawn the mirror dakini,
at night the fierce liberated mother,
Suojibuzhi the wealth deity.

Through past karma and vows,
one pledge matures in this time.
Earnestly and clearly we call to you—
may you swiftly descend here.

Chant her heart mantra (the more the better).

(Grandmaster Lu’s note: The above is the main practice—visualization, mantra, and samadhi. The beginning and concluding practices are generally the same as other sadhanas.)

Preliminaries: Great Prostrations, Great Offering, Fourfold Refuge, Four Immeasurables.

Conclusion: Dedication of merit, praise, Hundred-Syllable Mantra.

(If there are deficiencies in practice, the Hundred-Syllable Mantra will make up for them.)

In the great offering, a few points should be noted:

Drashi Lhamo especially loves liquor. Offer three bottles of baijiu grain hard liquor, poured three times in three rounds.

Other offerings include mugwort, pine needles, white khatas, ghee/butter, and tsampa.

Tsampa is roasted barley flour, staple of Tibetans. We may substitute it with white flour or bread. And common foods.

During practice, place two mirrors to represent the sun and moon in her hands.

As a dharma protector, if one practices with sincerity, besides sudden wealth one will also gain blessings of health, longevity, safety and peace, and auspiciousness. She also protects travelers.

Guidelines for Making Offerings in the Zashi Lhamo Practice

His Holiness Living Buddha Liansheng, the Lineage Root Guru, has provided the following supplementary instructions regarding the Zashi Lhamo Practice:

  1. Offerings such as khatas and mirrors may be replaced with new ones every half month.

  2. For each practice session, prepare nine cups of white liquor, symbolizing three rounds of toasts. After completing the practice, sprinkle the liquor in front of the statue or image of Zashi Lhamo. (If it’s not suitable to sprinkle liquor at the altar, you may collect it in a container.) Hold the cup and sprinkle the liquor in a clockwise circular motion, reciting in Taiwanese: “Gan-tsinn-gan-hoo-inn-inn, hoo-li-kin-ni-tua-than-tsinn (Sprinkle wine into a circle. May you prosper greatly this year.)”
Note: It may also be recited in Mandarin.

  3. Food offerings should be replaced daily, or freshly prepared before each practice session.

  4. The two circular mirrors may be separate or joined together.

  5. White cloth may be used as a substitute for a white khata.

  6. You may offer mugwort leaves, pine needles, butter, and tsampa (barley flour), and other regular food offerings. If tsampa is unavailable, white flour may be used instead.
